Seriously, now’s the time!
I went on a boat ride, snorkelled with fishies & watched eagles hunt!
A friend of a friend just died. He was 54 years old. Dropped dead with a heart attack.
Life is not fair. This person had a whole life ahead of them still, and it was brutally cut short!
As unbelievably sad, heart wrenching and world crushing these types of events are… They also serve a purpose to those left behind:
What are you waiting for?!?!?!?!
Life is everything but guaranteed. You may not wake up tomorrow, or next week, or next year. And I’m not saying this to put the fear in you, no. I am telling you this because we all think “I have so much time to do xyz”.
“I’ll go traveling when I’m retired.” Seriously, I have heard way too many stories of folks who died 2 years into retirement. Go! Start researching today, and book something!
“I’ll start my dream business when I have the time.” When you have what time?! Life will always be busy. There is always stuff to do, that’s easier to do in the moment, than doing something that’s hard and a bit scary.
“I’ve always wanted to live somewhere warm and tropical, at least part time when the weather up north is grey and cold.” GO! Make life decisions now, today, that will get you closer to this dream.
What will it take for you to wake up? Are you in a crappy job you hate? Have relationships that don’t bring you joy? Do you prioritize everybody else’s joy over your own?
I’m not going to lie and tell you it will be a cakewalk. Everything worth doing takes time and effort. And not every part of it is always fun either. It can be tricky, and hard, and you may feel like crying or giving up.
But do you want to lay on your deathbed when you’re old and wrinkly (if you’re so lucky), and think: “Oh I wish I had gone back to school to start my accounting business”. Or “I wish I had traveled when I was younger, agile and could climb all the mountains I could dream of”.
Or do you want to say: "I lived such an awesome life!!!! All the adventures, the meaningful work, the love & connection. It was absolutely beautiful!!"
I know I feel like I am shouting, and I’m asking you: What will it take for you to wake up, and get moving on your dreams?!
Don’t make those changes after tragedy happens. You don’t need your kids or spouse to die before living your dream! Show them what you’re made of, and be that awesome role model you want to be for them. Follow your dream! Include them in it. Figure out a way to make it work.
I have always danced to the beat of my own drum, even as a child. I spent a year as an exchange student in beautiful Nova Scotia when I was 15. I lived with a family unknown to me, new school, new everything. New language.
I travelled around the world at 19.
I’ve had several businesses, some successful, some not so much.
I played basketball professionally and on the youth national team growing up.
I moved to Canada (from Germany) at 19 because I fell in love. Alone. No family here. I made a pros & cons list to figure out whether I should stay and give it a shot or not. Guess what? I took a risk, that really just felt like “Why on earth wouldn’t I give this a try?” and did it! And I am so grateful I made that choice.
I have been working in a wildly male dominated field for 8 years – practically my entire working career. I suffered, I struggled, I learned, I hated it, I found it intriguing, and I stuck it out to get my ticket.
I proudly call myself a red seal carpenter. Because of that journey, I now have my own business, where I only do jobs for people I like. Only the kind of work I enjoy doing. At times that work for me. And at the same time I run a beautifully successful coaching practice. Why? Because I love helping people. And I'm good at it! (Even my grade 1 teacher thought so! She even put it in my report card!) I can’t not help people figure out what they love and then help them get there.
And I love the balance between the two. One is with people, often over the internet, or writing on a laptop, and the other is being physically active, using my hands, building beautiful things that make people happy and proud.
I have tried and done many things in my life already. Some are wild winners, and some are flops. And that’s okay! You can’t figure it out from just dreaming on your couch. At some point you have to get up off your butt, out of your head and start doing.
We’ve always made a point of following advice from people on their deathbeds. It seems strange not to. We have created our lives around this advice:
Do what you love
work less
play more
Love your family
spend time with them
Don’t sweat the small stuff etc
And it’s amazing!
And yes, I am writing all of this with the sole purpose of lighting a fire under your butt!
Don’t let life pass you by and be filled with regret later. Don’t wait to start living when you’re 80. (Better late than never I suppose!)
Start now.
You are worth it.
Who cares what other people think! Screw them if they’re not on board. You do you. Maybe they’re not your people anyways!
What will it take for you to wake up and take action? Don’t let another tragedy be the trigger.
What is it you want to do with your life? Something that really matters to you? Where your soul lights up? Go! Start! Do one thing today!
Got no idea?! What makes you mildly curious? Start there!
Yes, doing this kind of stuff can be scary! And for folks who are not natural “doers and go getters” extra intimidating. That’s where I come in. As your personal coach and cheerleader! To get you going, to keep you motivated and to make sure you stay on your path that feeds your soul. With this kind of support, you'll get to where you want to be so much faster than struggling it out on your own!
It’s ok to need help. I have received so much help and support from coaches, mentors and guides. I wouldn’t be here without them.
If you’re ready to get started on your dreams, I encourage you to apply to work with me here. I don't work with just anyone, so let’s see if we’re a good match! If it feels good to both of us: let's get you on your road!
I don’t know where we’re going, but we ride at dawn!
