The Best Fall Wines to Try This Season
Pumpkin spice season is here, but wine never goes out of style.
Summer is over, but that doesn't mean you can't still enjoy a nice glass of wine after work or on the weekend. The beauty of wine is that it comes in so many different varieties, that you can find a wine that has all the flavours of fall! These wines are perfect with a fresh slice of apple pie, or a smoky cheese platter. Try them all, and find your new favourite!
Pinot Noir - This wine gives all the flavours of the fall season – black tea, cinnamon, anise, raspberry, black cherry, forest floor, fresh earth, and tobacco. This wine is perfect for curling up with on a rainy night.
Shiraz or Syrah – With notes of plum, clove, pepper, and blackberry, this wine is deep, rich, and bold, fitting for the season.
Sémillon – One of three approved wines grown in the Bordeaux region, this wine in many cases is heavy, but dry and sweet at the same time – a great transition wine.
Barbera – Black cherry, blueberry, and plum are the dominant flavours in this Italian wine.
Dolcetto – This wine is habitually bitter, with an almond finish and note of licorice and black cherry floating throughout.
Oaked Chardonnay – Arguably one of the most popular white wine choices, chardonnay, specially the oaked variety brings notes of toffee, crème brulee, and pie spice, a lovely fall treat.
Zinfandel – often grown in California, this wine is oak-y, with licorice, black pepper, cinnamon, and fruit jams flavours in its profile.
Oaked Chenin Blanc – Notes of baked apple pie, butterscotch, buttered toast, and lemon dominate this wonderful white wine. All the flavours of fall in one delicious beverage.
Grüner Veltliner - This wine, when allowed to age creates a beautiful white pepper note with a touch of honey. Oaked versions give this wine a full-bodied feel, perfect for the cool weather.
